The canopy bed was already known in the Gothic. In the majority of cases it has four posts and a canopy. Roundabout you can often close the canopy bed. The canopy bed, also known as four poster bed, offered family members a lot of room earlier. Often the elderly children slept in it with their parents, three to four people was not uncommon.
The four poster bed was used for a good reason. Because of the ash- and cinder filling in the ceilings, which always trickled down by temperature distension and aging of the wooden beams and because of the vermins which lived in the walls and the ceilings, the roof of the bed gave good protection and eased, uninterupted sleep.
